Sister Efetu Alegrasu is the staff psychologist and head nurse. She is originally from Addis Abeba and has been at Desta Mender 10 months. She educated me on Colastomy bags. An internal incision is made to the correct size to fit the attachment plate for the colostamy bag. I was curious about the parts and pieces involved and the monitoring and care that is needed, preventing the women from living with these bags in rural villages. The bag should be changed atleast once a week, two bags per week are required. The opening has to be disinfected with soap, water and solutions. It is recommended that if the women chose to go live in the community they stay somewhere near a clinic so they can be monitored and receive appropriate care.
